Marijuana, so prevalent since the 60’s, is Spanish for Mary Jane. This is just a milder form of Hashish or hasheesh of the Orient. Both are derived from species of hemp plants. From Hashish the word assassin derived because the leader gave it to his robber band before they started out.

Has could be considered a short form of Hashish, and since hash is oft defined, "Everything gone to pot", no wonder our youth go for pot. They think it’s food! Then since Mary Jane is feminine, "it has to be harmless". But the French say "Femme Fatale".
